A fully funded PhD position is available at the labs of Martijn Meeter and Chris Olivers at VU University Amsterdam, to study control of attention. Several studies will be run testing the idea that control of attention is usually automated: that it is efficient, imperturbable by cognitive demands, inflexible, and unconscious.
Requirements
The candidate has (or will have in the near future) an MSc degree in cognitive psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, physics, informatics, AI, biology, or a comparable area. Experience with programming or scripting languages (e.g., Visual Basic or MatLab) is preferred. The candidate should be able to start at the latest on
August 1, 2011.
Conditions of employment
Appointment will initially be for 12 months. After a successful evaluation the appointment will be prolonged for another 36 months. The employment will have to result in a written dissertation by the end of the fourth year. Payment will be according to standard regulations from € 2.042,- per month in the first year to € 2.612,- per month in the fourth year (gross income). You will be based in Amsterdam. Evolution spatio-temporal migration of Black Scoters (Melanitta nigra) on the French coasts. Upcoming events
BACKGROUND
The common scoter (Melanitta nigra ) is a marine diving duck which breeds in Scandinavia and Western Siberia, which migrates each fall to join his winter range that extends Baltic Sea to Spain. This species is a fairly common winter visitor on the French coast with about 30,000 people every winter. But like other marine Anatidae, censuses carried out each year have shown a significant decline and continuing population numbers wintering in France. Meanwhile, the European breeding populations of these species are stable, although hypotheses have been advanced to explain this decline on our shores, they have never been verified. Indeed, it is conjectured an amendment to the winter range. Moreover, the counts of wintering birds are particularly difficult because of their remoteness from the coast, and evaluation fluctuations in numbers from coastal sites to monitor the active migration (SEAWATCH) seem to be a good way to assess changes in abundance and phenology of the black scoter in particular. ABOUT
The internship project revolves around two questions:
(1) Quantify changes in phenology transition and fluctuations of population numbers of Black Scoters in France on the monitoring sites the active migration of the Channel coast (Cap de la Hague, Cap Gris Nez, dike Clipon ...).
(2) Assess the importance of climate change on changes / trends detected. SKILLS REQUIRED
